Matoppo Inn

Matoppo Inn

This wonderfully restored 17th-century drostdy building nestles inside a huge, verdant garden estate with a pool and in the midst of the Great Karoo. It is an elegant, urban retreat with a romantic history, a distinct sense of design and a dedication to service quality. Matoppo aan de wagenweg offers luxurious accommodation in Beaufort West in the piece and serenity of a spacious Karoo environment, whether you are here on holiday, for pleasure or on business.

Our Accommodation

Choose between the antique guest rooms, the family units and a room for the disabled. All tastefully, individually decorated rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with a bar fridge, tea/coffee facilities, satellite TV, hairdryer and electric blankets.

Beautiful facilities for functions, weddings or a conference are also available.

Dining

Breakfast, lunch and supper are served in the dining area dating from the 1830s. High wooden ceilings evoke a bygone era, while big sash windows let fresh Karoo air and sunlight into the space where shining yellow wood floors previously hosted great meals, state functions and balls.

In the summer, you can dine on Karoo cuisine in the courtyard or in the comfort of your own air-conditioned room. To keep the Karoo winter chill at bay, dinner is served beside a roaring wood fire. Chefs produce a three-course meal based on a menu option made by you. Please make your dinner reservations prior to arrival.

Short History

Today known as Matoppo Inn, Matoppo House has a long and rich history that dates back to around 1835. It is one of Beaufort West's most magnificent and stunning historical homes, stark in its simplicity. The main home was erected for Magistrate Johannes Jacobus Meintjies, the famous Andries Stockenström's son-in-law. Though it was Meintjies' private residence and hence not technically a 'drostdy' (official residence of a landdrost or magistrate), it has been known by that term for a long time.

Because it quickly became the town's social center, Meintjies Street, which leads to the gate, was extended to 80 feet (24,4 meters), the same width as the main street, so carriages could turn at the gate. Later, the street was transformed into a lively market with a smithy. Today Matoppo House serves as a pet-friendly guesthouse.

Most of our rooms open directly onto our large, well-tended garden, or onto a wrap-around verandah on which you can enjoy your breakfast or a relaxing drink at sunset. Alternatively or wetter permitting, breakfast is served in our beautiful dining room, complete with a Victorian fireplace. Served by our friendly and helpful team , our extravagant continental buffet and scrumptious full English breakfast are all made with top-quality and fresh ingredients.

If you prefer to cater for yourself we also have two cottages. However, breakfast can be added upon booking. We recommend the Medindi Cottage to long-staying guests who want more privacy and who may wish to prepare their own meals, or to families accompanied by young children who do not want to sleep separately from their parents, or to anyone looking for a bit of extra space and comfort. Large in size, the room can be converted to a triple if required.

Madiba Cottage is best suited for couples or single guests who are looking to have a small space in which they can make light meals in the kitchenette. This is a favourite among our guests who are staying for a long time and wish to exclude breakfast from their stay.

Our guesthouse is also great for group bookings and we know how difficult it can be to organise this. Our aim is to make your booking process as quick and easy as possible. On top of that we offer fantastic group discounts, so give us a call or drop us an email to find out how we can help you.

Our History

The genesis of the garden began in the 1950s. An avid plant collector, Marthinus Malherbe amassed an amazing array of cactus seeds from the Americas that Molly planted and nurtured to create a one-of-a-kind garden in South Africa for that day and time. Through ownership changes the garden was very neglected but resurrected and expanded in 2000 by new owners. In 2011 Soekershof was converted into a boutique guesthouse with an outstanding restaurant and in 2017 new owners, Francois and Jeanne, took over, expanded the cacti gardens and upgraded the rooms.

NamibRand Family Hideout

NamibRand Family Hideout

Only you and the desert. Our NamibRand Family Hideout is a converted and deserted home of Karakul sheep farmers which is remotely situated on the farm Stellarine on the NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of Southern Africa’s largest private nature reserves.

Our Accommodation

As the sole occupier of our charming and authentic farmhouse, you will be able to appreciate quality time spent alone with your family or friends. The Hideout is simply yet comfortably equipped for your essential needs and even wheelchair-friendly. It is a solid haven from the sometimes harsh desert conditions and evidence of bygone farming days still remains in the old walls, fences and outbuildings, which are almost buried by ever-shifting sand dunes.

Accommodation is mostly on a self-catering basis, but we gladly prepare meals such as half board or full board if booked well in advance.

We added an exclusive campsite to our accommodation offerings. Out of sight and earshot of each other, Campsite Orion and Campsite Venus are each nestled into the dunes, with a waterhole for animals and birds. The views are stunning and you are truly alone with nature, but have modern camping facilities such as flush toilets and solar-heated hot showers. Ample shade is provided for protection from the Namibian sun and canvas roller blinds for wind protection.

Opened in March 2019, campsite Jupiter is located in its own private dune valley and has the same facilities as the other two campsites; however it has an enlarged wooden deck with a roof and wind protection, a charging station for all your devices as well as a drinking waterhole for animals. It is also fully wheelchair-accessible.

Please note that limited cellphone coverage and Wi-Fi can be located only 5 kilometres away at the base camp in case of an emergency.

Activities

Enjoy the spectacular views over the vast plains and ancient blue mountain ranges after enjoying one of our activities on offer, e.g. 4×4 dune drives or educational walks with our qualified guide into the glowing red dunes of the Namib Desert for a close encounter with the fascinating variety of fauna and flora. The kids will love dune-boarding and the endless open spaces, or chasing after beetles and lizards scuttling over the sand dunes.

A small water-hole just 50 metres from the veranda attracts a myriad of birdlife as well as oryx antelopes, springboks, zebras, bat-eared foxes, porcupines and other African wildlife. With a bit of luck, you might even see giraffes! The exceptional surroundings and clarity of the air provide endless opportunities for photography by day and fantastic star gazing at night.

Slow down, leave the stress and pace of our high-tech world behind you for a while and relax around an open fire in the silence of the multi-coloured sunset, punctuated only by the click of barking geckos. Whilst on holiday in Namibia, here in the vast and ancient Namib Desert, nature still reigns supreme.
